The css properties that we’ll be using are text-align, width, and margin. There is one caveat to the margin:auto technique, IE5/Win does not support it. Fortunately there is a work around. IE5/Win incorrectly applies the property text-align to block-level elements. What this means is that we can use text-align to center the wrapper div by applying text-align:center to the <body> tag. This though causes another problem because all elements will inherit the text-align rule. It’s real easy to counteract this by simply giving the wrapper div a rule of text-align:left to move everything back.
The css for this follows. There you go. Now we have centered layout that will work correctly in all browsers and is XHTML valid and wow gold semantically correct. You can even view this page’s source to see a working example. I know this tutorial was long for something so simple but I want to make sure you understand not only how to do something but how it works.Since CSS is supposed to be used for all presentation aspects of a page such as colors, font-sizes, and layout, we should be using css alignment properties to accomplish the centering of the page content.
